The Managing Director provides overall strategic vision, leadership, and direction to the Portland and LA SET offices. The Managing Director (MD) will be based in Portland, OR. The MD is responsible for overseeing relationships with clients and formulates plans to extend business with existing and new clients. He/she will actively manage P&L based on flow of business, ensuring delivery of profitability commitment. Additionally, the MD ensures efficient operations of the agency, including operational process, facilities, and engagement of necessary support resources. He/She will be tasked with ensuring staff has the necessary resources to perform including people, training, and tools.
 
 
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
 
  • Ensures agency culture is healthy and teams are functioning in a manner consistent with the overall goals of the agency  
  • Communicates with agency staff and leaders on key corporate and agency specific information
  • Participates in SET Leadership meetings
  • Supports the organizations keys initiatives within the agency
  • Works with Office Manager to plan schedule of activities and events which promote communication, teamwork, and recognition of accomplishments
  • Builds agency in line with the vision of SET through a clear strategy for local development
  • Ensures the sharing of work and best practices between agencies and that the needs of the clients are being met (exceeded) in each agency
  • Ensures cross pollination of skills and learning across the SET agencies
  • Ensures each client assigned to the agency feels they are receiving a premium level of service from SET which exceeds expectations
  • Develops relationships with key decision makers at agency’s clients with consistent check-in’s on performance; takes corrective action where needed
  • Works with client services team to develop performance and service goals for each client
  • Reviews all significant proposals to ensure they meet our business standards
  • Leads debrief sessions with clients on large projects
  • Problem solves on high-level account and production issues and knows when to involve COO
  • Develops and implements added value ideas to generate new revenue streams for the agency
  • Ensures agency meets or exceed all defined financial objectives
  • Works closely with finance team to create agency budgets and forecasts
  • Manages agency expenditures to ensure compliance with agency budget
  • Approves all expense reports from agency staff and purchase expenditures over $250
  • Provides monthly variation explanations for expenditures exceeding forecast or expenditures greater than 10% forecast
  • Provides monthly variation explanations for client billings under forecast or client billings greater than 10% over forecast
  • Reviews monthly client Profit & Loss statements (P&Ls) against agreed upon client fees and analyzes impact on account and agency profitability
  • Oversees annual fee and contract negotiations and other broad budget issues; works closely with Finance on contract and fee proposals; recommends staffing adjustments as necessary based on increase or decrease in annual fee
  • Ensures agency is properly staffed with top talent with the right mix of skills needed to meet the demands of the agency’s client base
  • Partners closely with HR Director and agency leaders to recruit, train, and terminate staff as needed
  • Conducts weekly agency production meetings to asses bottlenecks and or excess capacity
  • Participates in weekly corporate production meetings to facilitate inter-agency staffing
  • Reviews weekly/monthly utilizations reports for agency. Take corrective action as needed
  • Works with agency team leads (creative + production) to continually assess talent and resource requirements of agency
  • Provides leadership and professional development to staff. Mentor, and train employees to ensure we have the strongest team working on the brand
  • Ensures agency grows client base consistent with the overall growth objectives of the company
  • Works closely with the COO to identify target industries, services and clients for the office
Example: The LA office will own environment design for premium lifestyle brands in California
  • Networks with local WPP agency leads to educate them on the SET value proposition
  • Participates in pitch presentations 
  • Works with marketing to develop targeted outbound campaigns that support office’s business objectives
Example: Email campaign to brands in target markets that focuses on a specific capacity
  • Networks at industry trade-shows/events
  • Ensures all projects owned by Project Teams and Creative Teams are on-time, on-budget, and on-brand
  • Reviews all significant proposals to ensure team is set up for success
  • Oversees office production meetings to make sure teams are on track
  • Attends and participates in all major meetings & presentations
  • Builds and maintains top-level client relationships and works to build relationships beyond current clients
  • Works with functional leads (Creative & Production) to problem solve as necessary
  • Oversees creative product through close collaboration with the Creative Lead of the of agency
 
 
QUALIFICATIONS:
 
The list of qualifications includes the minimum qualifications necessary for any new employee for this position, such as specific prior work experience, certifications/licenses, technical knowledge of software, machinery, or tools, and physical abilities such as relevant lifting, bending, walking, and/or stooping.
 
  • Bachelors degree in Business, or related field preferred
  • 10 + years account experience in a creative environment preferred
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines in a fast-paces creative environment
  • Ability to effectively and appropriately interact with co-workers at a variety of levels, across many disciplines
  • Effective negotiation and problem-solving skills requires
  • Strong financial understanding of budgeting, estimating, and agency profitability
  • A demonstrated track record of gaining trust and respect by consistently demonstrating sound critical thinking skills and maintaining composure in stressful situations
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills with the ability to communicate with all levels of employees
  • Highly organized with a keen sense of attention to detail
  • Exceptional initiative and follow-through skills
  • After hours work and overnight travel required
